Bone mineral density (BMD) is a test that measures the amount of calcium in a specific region of the bones to estimate your bone strength.

A computed tomography (CT) scan (also called a computerized axial tomography, or CAT scan) is a special type of X-ray that can produce detailed pictures of structures inside the body. This advanced imaging service produces clearer pictures of internal organs than a regular X-ray.

Mammography is the most accurate method of detecting breast cancer today. Women who follow a regimen of monthly breast self-exams, annual exams by their doctors and annual mammograms after age 40 can increase their breast cancer survival rates by up to 97 percent.

At Baptist Health, we offer two types of mammograms: Digital mammograms and 3D mammograms.

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer, allowing the recorded data to be enhanced, magnified or optimized for further evaluation.

Digital mammogram images are available immediately and can be quickly transmitted to a physician’s office or other facilities.

3D Mammography

The 3D mammogram allows providers to catch breast cancer earlier, resulting in more favorable outcomes for patients.

Fluoroscopy uses a continuous beam of X-rays to evaluate structures and movement within the body, such as blood traveling through a blood vessel, the diaphragm moving up and down or food moving through the digestive tract. A contrast material that shows up on X-rays can be injected or swallowed during fluoroscopy to outline blood vessels or organs.

A low-dose CT lung screening uses X-rays to create detailed pictures of your lungs. Meant for current or former smokers, a low dose CT lung screening can reveal potentially-cancerous abnormalities on the lungs that a traditional chest X-ray could miss.

Nuclear medicine is one of our advanced imaging services that uses computer technology and radioactive substances to produce images of the body and treat disease. This imaging service is particularly useful for detecting tumors, aneurysms, irregular blood flow to tissues and inadequate functioning of certain organs.

A PET/CT Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) is an imaging test that checks for cancer and diseases in the body. PET uses small amounts of radioactive materials called radiotracers or radiopharmaceuticals, a special camera, and a computer to evaluate organ and tissue functions.

UFE is a less invasive technique intended to block the flow of blood to uterine fibroids, depriving them of the oxygen and nutrients they require to grow. This advanced imaging service is performed under conscious sedation and typically lasts less than one hour.

Ultrasound, also called sonography, is a key part of diagnostic imaging because it doesn’t use ionizing radiation (like X-rays or CT scans). Instead, it depends on the physical properties of sound.

A handheld device called a transducer functions as both a speaker and a microphone. It sends out ultrasonic pulses—sound waves at frequencies much higher than what humans can hear—which bounce off internal structures. Denser objects, such as gallstones or bone, reflect more sound, while fluids allow waves to pass through easily. These returning echoes are processed in real-time by a computer to generate dynamic images of the body in motion.

Common Types of Ultrasounds

While many people associate ultrasound primarily with pregnancy, the technology has specialized applications across almost every field of medicine:

• Doppler Ultrasound: Used to measure the direction and speed of blood cells as they move through vessels. It is essential for detecting blood clots, blocked arteries, and heart valve defects. For more information. 
• Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS): A highly specialized procedure where a tiny transducer is attached to the end of a catheter and threaded into a blood vessel. It provides a 360-degree view from the inside of the artery, helping surgeons see the exact buildup of plaque. For More Information.
• Echocardiogram (Echo): An ultrasound specifically for the heart. It provides a live view of the heart’s chambers, valves, and pumping function. For more information.
• Abdominal Ultrasound: The common way to examine the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen for tumors or stones.
• Pelvic Ultrasound: Often used to monitor fetal development in pregnancy, but also essential for diagnosing conditions in the uterus and ovaries.
• Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): Involves inserting an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube) down the throat or into the digestive tract to obtain higher-resolution images of internal organs, such as the pancreas.
• Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound: Used to examine muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints to diagnose tears or chronic inflammation such as tendonitis.

The oldest form of medical imaging, a radiograph or X-ray helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. An X-ray works by using a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the body’s internal structures.
